Whos Who in the Hiring Process

Whos Who in the Hiring ProcessWhos Who in the Hiring ProcessWhen you are hunting for a new job it is important to recognize that on the hiring side of the table you will find people with diverse roles and pressures upon them. Each has a valuable contribution to make to the process, but when you step back and fulfill their various needs youll do much to advance your own objective of getting that new position.Hiring ManagersWhat they do These key decision makers recognize a need to be filled, define the expectations for the person who will fill it and ultimately judge candidates based on who will best contribute to their own success as managers. What you need to know The underlying needs of the hiring manager may not be expressed at all on a job description. Its only when you figure out what they are, and demonstrate how you can fulfill them better than anyone else that you will get the job offer.Human Resource Staffing ProfessionalsWhat they do Staffing is one of several specialty area s for human resources professionals. Companies with small HR departements may include these responsibilities as part of a more generalist role, while in larger companies this can be a sub-department of professionals devoted to this task solely. HR professionals partner with the hiring manager and are responsible for assuring that all relevant laws are followed and the process is sufficiently documented throughout. They serve as the face of the company, working with external recruiters and candidates. These professionals manage the entire workflow of the hiring process including writing and posting job descriptions, culling promising rsums, performing initial phone screenings and managing the whole interviewing process up to and including preparing and presenting a job offer. What you need to know They are most commonly judged by twin metrics time-to-hire and cost-per-hire. It is likely that they are conducting searches for multiple positions simultaneously, and they are incentivized t o make things go as quickly as possible despite the fact that job seekers frequently view them as roadblocks to work around. Because cost is always a factor, they will much prefer hiring someone who is referred by a current employee rather than paying the expensive fees recruiters charge. Hint It is always good to network your way into a company to get noticed. When treated with respect for the integrity that they bring to the hiring process, HR professionals can be great allies both for hiring managers and job seekers.External or Third-Party Contingency RecruitersWhat they do Search for candidates who most closely match the deliverables articulated by their corporate clients. Often they must compete against other companies who are simultaneously working on the same assignment, but they are only paid if and when a candidate they submit is hired. What you need to know Because their competition is fierce, recruiters have little time to waste on people who are irrelevant to their core s earch activities. They are about building relationships with people who can be useful to them now and in the future.Recruiters are often unwilling to tell you whom they work for lest you do a foolish end-run around them to speak with the client directly. Companies tend not to like such disloyalty in a candidate. If you do try to cut a recruiter out from his own search and you are found out, you will likely be scratched from consideration for this position and any others that the recruiter or company may have in the future. While you have a legitimate desire to control where your rsum goes, one of the trade-offs of working with a recruiter is that you might not know the personenname of their client until after your rsum is submitted.Believe it or not, the fees a company pays to recruiters dont come out of your salary. Just the opposite is true. Recruiters are in a position to know how much an employer really will be able to pay and will push toward the maximum. The higher your first-y ear salary, the greater an external recruiters commission will be.Executive or Retained RecruitersWhat they do Typically these recruiters focus on executive level or board member searches. They are commissioned as the sole representative of their client company to find and assemble a panel of top-tier talent. Retained recruiters are expected to do serious vetting of candidates, including reference checks prior to submitting candidates. They are more likely be viewed by their client companies as trusted advisors, while contingency recruiters are more likely perceived as hired guns. What you need to know Because they arent competing with other recruiters once they have landed the search, they typically will clearly state who their client is and try to sell the virtues of that client to talented individuals who typically are not perceived to be in the job market. Executive recruiters have a lot riding on the line because they are getting paid along the way and have greater pressure to co mplete difficult searches. Contingency recruiters are, by contrast, only willing to put so much time into a fruitless effort before abandoning it in favor of a more promising search for a different client. Now that you know the pressures on each of the key players in the hiring process, give them whatever you can to make their lives easier. Youre sure to gain the favorable attention your hintergrund deserves.Happy hunting

Survey Not everyone is into banning plastic straws

Survey Not everyone is into banning plastic strawsSurvey Not everyone is into banning plastic strawsAs more companies like Starbucks join a growing movement to ban plastic straws in America, more of us are being forced to reckon with a plastic straw-less future. And when asked about it for a new BuzzFeed News and market research firmIpsos poll, the majority of us say it is not a future we want governments to regulate.Americans are not ready to face the last strawThe erreichbar poll surveyed 2,000 adults nationwide around August and found that we are open to the idea of making individual choices around plastic straws. We are open to cutting back to help the environment, but we want there to be a plastic straw if we need one. More than half agreed that plastic straws are harmful to wildlife and 79% strongly support geschftslebenes using biodegradable straws, but the majority - 75% - also thinkbusinesses should offer plastic straws if requested. The participants were open with individu al businesses cutting back, but there was less support for governments to mandate this. Less than half - 48% - of respondents said they supported a local government ban. The survey suggests that we are not fully behind going straw-less. We want to be able to opt-in, and as disability advocates have pointed out, this is not just a want - its a need.Flexible straws were first developed to help people drink in hospitals, and now, they are used by people with mobility challenges.Reusable straws can be hard to maintain and sterilize, and may not be safe to use, while compostable products, which can dissolve in hot liquids, present a choking and allergen hazard, writer s.e. smith wrote for Vox about how the ban would affect disabled people like her.Its always going to be a good idea for restaurants and coffee shops to keep plastic straws on hand for disabled people. The criticism from survey participants and disability advocates demonstrates that Americans are willing to cut back on pla stic use - as long as business and government are willing to be flexible about it.

Heres why insomnia gets worse this time of year

Heres why insomnia gets worse this time of yearHeres why insomnia gets worse this time of yearIf you find yourself feeling a little bit off this time of year, or maybe are tossing and turning in bed more than usual and then waking up groggy, youre not alone. The lack of sunlight were getting during the winter can really mess with our hormone levels, especiallymelatonin, the sleep regulator, and can cause a case of the winter blues (which can range from simply feeling a bit down to full-blownseasonal affective disorder).Thats right - the feeling is not just in your imagination, and the fluctuation in hormones can have a real impact on your sleeping habits and sense of calmness. We asked sleep and mental health experts to further explain the connection betweeninsomniaand the winter months and the effect sleep has on our overall mood and energy.Keep reading for the tips and tricks you need to keep yoursleep scheduleon track and your well-being in check during what should be the fruchtw ein peaceful season. Why insomnia happensOur bodies are designed to wake with the sunlight, and when the sun rises later and sets earlier, our circadian rhythms (the body clock that regulates our sleeping and waking and can even affect things like our mood andmenstrual cycle) can get out of whack. In winter, waking up when it is dark prevents our wake cycle from abfluging. Sunlight essentially triggers our wakefulness, which needs to complete its cycle before hormones that induce sleep (such as melatonin) can be released, explainsKatharina Lederle, a London-based doctor of human sleep physiology.Melatonin imbalances can cause depressive symptoms as well too much melatonin may be one of the culprits of seasonal affective disorder, saysNada Milosavljevic, a faculty member at Harvard Medical School and founder ofSage Tonic. While this may not cause insomnia, it may have similar after-effects a heavy layer of grogginess and the inability to engage with others as usual or stay energized th roughout the day.On the opposite end of the spectrum, low melatonin levels are what can really keep you awake at night. And it may have something to do with all thatNetflixing and chillingyoure doing in bed during the chilly weather, multiple studies show. The blue, artificial light emitted from our favorite devices while binge-watching or scrolling through Instagram before going to sleep can really mess with our circadian rhythms, therefore disrupting disrupt our bodys sense of sleeping and waking, according to newresearch.More research has tied blue light even closer to insomnia. Researchers from theNational Sleep Foundationhave found that increased exposure toblue lightfrom people using electronic devices before bed causes a decrease in levels of melatonin in their bodies, making it harder to fall asleep and making them less alert in the morning, Milosavljevic says. However, melatonin isnt the only biological factor in sleep health during the winter. Because of the lack of sunligh t, our vitamin D levels are also low this time of year, which can mess with sleep quality and quantity. Low levels of vitamin D are connected to lower sleep efficiency scores, saysCarolyn Dean, a medical doctor, naturopath, and member of the Medical Advisory Board for theNutritional Magnesium Association. This can mean it takes a long time to fall asleep or that sleep is restless and disrupted with many awakenings in the night, Dean says. Its important not to let your health fall by the wayside this time of year, especially when it comes to vital vitamins and minerals. The mineralmagnesiumis also crucial to sleep because it helps the body process both vitamin D and melatonin correctly. Magnesium also relieves the muscle zug that can prevent restful sleep, says Dean. Then, there are the usual winter habits you have, like bundling up in heavy pajamas and blankets and cranking up the heat in your home. This can actually disrupt your sleep, says Tara Youngblood, co-founder and Chief Scient ist atKryo Inc.If our bodies are unable to lower our core temperature, as they are naturally programmed to do, we are unable to reach optimized Slow Wave Sleep and get the benefits of more deep sleep and better sleep density, she explains.Dont forget the poor diet and exercise habits you may have from the influx ofholiday partiesyoure attending, and the shopping, baking, and wrapping too. You may be feeling too sluggish to hit the gym when its cold and pitch-dark in the morning, but your eating habits play a major part also.Holiday foods are chock-full of sugar, dense carbohydrates, and fattening ingredients. Not only can these foods affect your appetite and metabolism, but they can also interfere with the balance of a hormone called leptin, which is known to influence our sleep cycle, Youngblood says. And, Youngblood adds, its high time for colds and the flu, which often cause sleep to be restless and interrupted.Dont blame sleeplessness on a stuffy nose or too many sugar cookies - you cant discount the stress of the holiday season or pressure to keep your list of resolutions either. It is likely that insomnia is further exacerbated by the financial, social, and familial stresses that often occur during and immediately after the festive period, Lederle adds. All the more reason to step back and give yourself the gift ofself-carethis time of year, no matter how many people are on your shopping list. How to fix your sleep habitsTo get yourself back on track after a stretch of insomnia, start by regulating your bedtime and wake up calls. Its best if your phone, alarm clock, or other blue light-filled devices are nowhere near your bed, Milosavljevic says. It may seem like the oldest trick in the book, but stashing electronics and alarm clocks across the room from where you sleep can force you up and out of bed to start the day.Sleeping habits can also improve when you take stock of the amount of vitamins and minerals youre putting into your body. Try a vitamin D a nd a magnesium supplement like magnesium citrate if youre struggling with sleep.Magnesium citrate powder is a highly absorbable form that can be mixed with hot or cold water and sipped in the evening and throughout the day for deep, restful sleep, Dean says. For more help drifting off to sleep, Youngblood says sleeping in cooler temperatures may help you fall asleep faster and can even give your metabolism a boost. Many other natural remedies can help prep the body to relax and wind down one of the bodys most instinctive is exercise. Even a moderate bedtimeyoga flowcan help your mind and body ease into sleep mode.A simple rumliche lage like childs pose can relax the body, ease muscle tension, and clear the mind from daily stresses that can impact a restful nights sleep, says Milosavljevic. To go along with that childs pose, use somelavender essential oilor sip on anherbal tea, particularly one containing lavender, valerian root, and dandelion root, all geared toward combatting sleeples sness and encouraging the body to rest, she adds. If you really need some coaching, ameditation appcan help, or some background sounds of white noise or nature sounds will have you in dreamland in no time. This article was originally published on Brit + Co.

Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the cons truction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to e xceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive o ption for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

The best indoor office plants to brighten your day and purify air

The best indoor office plants to brighten your day and purify airThe best indoor office plants to brighten your day and purify airWhen you canleid enjoy the benefits of going outside at work, bring the outside indoors and get yourself a houseplant for your office.Their vibrant leaves not only perk up your dreary desk, but they are proven to give you a much-needed breath of fresh air. Unlike us, plants can absorb harmful gasses from the air and trap them in their roots.Back in 1989, NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America identified the best plants for purifying indoor air filled with harmful air pollutants like benzene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde, which are key for offsetting sick building syndrome. Here are NASA-approved houseplants you can get to purify your stuffy office that will not require much thought to care for1. Varigated snake plant (Sansevieria)Also called mother-in-laws tongue, these spiky plants are the best for beginners who have black thumbs a nd kill plants regularly because they can withstand deep neglect. Take it from someone who forgot to water hers before a long vacation. Forget to water your snake plant for weeks? It will forgive you. Put your snake plant under fluorescent lights away from a window? It can handle it.These low-maintenance plants require little light and not much water to survive. And while were neglecting them, they are making it easier for us to breathe. In the NASA study, they had a high chemical removal rate. Snake plants can absorb formaldehyde, a toxic agent found in paper bags and synthetic fibers that can give us itchy noses and scratchy throats at work. While most plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen during the day, snake plants do this process at night, making them a good choice if your home office also doubles as your bedroom.Pollutants removed benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, and xylene2. English ivy (Hedera helix)English ivy plants are fast-growing climbers and air-purif ying powerhouses. The NASA study found they were especially effective at absorbingbenzene, a toxic agent found in plastics and tobacco smoke that can give us headaches. They can thrive in indirect window sunlight.Pollutants removed benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, and xylene3. Peace lily (Spathiphyllum)A plant that can bloom right by your computer monitor, peace lilies can purify five of the most dangerous toxins to us while brightening our view. They grow best in shady spots.Just remember to keep this plant out of reach of curious children and pets. The leaves can be poisonous.Pollutants removed ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, and trichloroethylene4. Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum)Spider plants are another resilient plant that can tolerate your neglect. They prefer bright light but will tolerate you leaving them in less than ideal conditions.Pollutants removed xylene, formaldehyde5. Barberton daisy (Gerbera jamesonii)The Barberton daisy was among the top three plants in the NASA study that had the best surface area to chemical removal rate ratio (snake plants and English ivies were the other two). This flowering plant comes in a number of sizes and colors.Pollutants removedformaldehyde, xylene,trichloroethylene6. Red-edged dracaena (Dracaena marginata)Also called the Madagascar dragon tree, red-edged dracaena plants are easy to care for and can grow up to 15-feet high. They excel at producing oxygen while filtering out dangerous air pollutants. Keep them out of sight of your pets, though. They are extremely poisonous to cats and dogs.Pollutants removed benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, and xylene

What Successful People Have in Common- The Muse

What Successful People Have in Common- The MuseWhat Successful People Have in CommonFor my book, Getting There A Book of Mentors, I spent five years interviewing some of the most successful people alive (Warren Buffett, Michael Bloomberg, Anderson Cooper, Sara Blakely, Jeff Koons, Kathy Ireland, Les Moonves, to name a few). Here are the six things I found them all to have in common1. They Understand Their Circle of CompetenceIn his Getting There essay, legendary investor Warren Buffett explains that its essential to understand your strengths and weaknesses. When youre deciding what to pursue, knowing what to leave out is as important as knowing what to focus on. Buffett quotes Tom Watson (the founder of IBM) who said, Im no genius but Im smart in spots and I stay around those spots.Buffett explains, My brain is not a general-purpose brain that works marvelously in all situations. There are all sorts of things that Im no good at and there are all kinds of investment opportunities Im n ot able to comprehend. I understand some kinds of simple businesses. I cant understand complicated ones. Coca-Cola, for example, isnt very complicated. Its a durable product and the appeal is universal. I try to find businesses I can grasp, where I like the people running them and think the price makes sense in relation to the future economics.John Paul DeJoria, billionaire co-founder of the Patrn Spirits Company and John Paul Mitchell Systems, advises, Do what you do best and try to find others who can fill in by doing the things you are not good at. For instance, I am terrible at details- accounting especially, so I hire accountants to help me. This frees me up to focus on the things I do excel at and I can run a more efficient operation. No one is good at everything, but everyone I spoke with became incredibly successful by honing in on what they excel at. So, look for your natural strengths to see where you can stand out.2. They Harness Their PassionsYouve probably heard this bef ore- and for good reason The path to success is almost guaranteed to be arduous, but if you love what you do youll thrive on the inevitable challenges and have the stamina to achieve your potential. If you pursue something just for the money or because you think you should, it probably wont end well.World famous scientist J. Craig Venter (a.k.a., the first partie to sequence the human genome) says, So many people get pushed along in the system, and because they dont really know what they want to do, they practically let their careers be chosen for them. If youre not passionate about what youre doing, its hard to be successful at it. You can show up and do whats required, and you can even do your job well, but thats not where real success is going to come from. Success comes from doing something extraordinary with passion and intensity.3. Their Career Paths Are FluidGood news, career changers, well-known entrepreneurs demonstrate that its OK if your initial plan doesnt work out Whats essential is to always keep your eyes open for new opportunities and be open to change. For examplecraigslist founder Craig Newmark stumbled upon his businesses while trying to pursue a social goal.Michael Bloomberg only decided to abflug his own company, Bloomberg LP, after being fired from his job at Salomon Brothers.Jillian Michaels, who runs a health and wellness empire, dedicated herself to that field after being fired as a talent agent.Les Moonves, the President and CEO of CBS, originally pursued acting, but eventually realized he would be happier on the other side of the camera.Moonves elaborates, Things sometimes come at you and hit you in the face. If your path is rigid, youll likely miss out on opportunities...I shifted from acting to producing theater and realized it felt great. Before long, I shifted again and got my first job in TV as a development executive at Columbia Pictures Television. If you keep coming across obstacles, see if theres another opportunity you can p ursue that might be a better fit.4. They Create Their Own OpportunitiesSuccessful people dont just wait around for someone to recognize a talent in them and offer them a big break. It would be awesome if the world worked that way, but unfortunately it rarely does. If you want something, you have to figure out a way to make it happen. For example, Anderson Cooper wanted to be a foreign news correspondent but couldnt even get an entry-level job at any of the major networks. He ended up working as a fact checker for Channel One, an agency that produces news programs for high schools.Cooper quickly realized that people tend to pigeonhole you in whatever role youre in, and sometimes you have to do something drastic in order to change peoples perception of you. So he quit his job, borrowed a friends video camera, and went overseas to shoot stories by himself. Living on a mere five dollars a day, Cooper made his videos as interesting and dangerous as possible, then offered them to Channel O ne for such a low price that they couldnt refuse. This bold move is what launched his career and enabled him to live his dream.Dont put something off indefinitely because youve yet to get a green light. Sometimes, the only way to demonstrate youre ready for a new project is to go out and abflug it. 5. They Question EverythingInnovators dont blindly follow others. They think on their own and understand that just because something has been done one way for years doesnt mean that its the best way, or that another way wont work. For example, in the mid 1970s Gary Hirshberg noticed that we were changing the way food was made, for the worse (injecting animals with hormones and antibiotics, spraying fields and produce with toxic pesticides, and using chemical fertilizers, all with no real knowledge of what would happen to kids who grew up on a diet containing these things). Hirshberg started promoting organic food before most people knew what the word meant. He soon co-founded the organic y ogurt company, Stonyfield Farms. He recalls, When I tried to get retailers to carry Stonyfield yogurt, which was a little more expensive than the nonorganic brands, theyd say, Does organic mean it has dirt in it? It was difficult to get stores to carry our products. It took Stonyfield nine years to make its first nickel, but it is now the largest organic yogurt company in the world.Hirshberg says, Challenging conventional wisdom can be scary, but most major changes happen because someone asked Why not do it differently? If you dont ask, you dont get.6. Theyre ResilientMost people who are well known for their achievements have failed- numerous times. However, they eventually found success because they were able to stand back up and try again, or learn from their mistakes and try something new. The point is They forced themselves to keep moving forward.Author Jeff Kinney spent eight years writing his first Diary of a Wimpy Kid book only to have it rejected by multiple publishers. Abram s finally gave him a chance and there are now over 115 million Wimpy Kid books in print (not to mention the movies).John Paul DeJoria was fired from three jobs and lived in his car on $2.50 a day. He went on to found John Paul Mitchell Systems and the Patron Spirits Company. After establishing his own architectural practice, Frank Gehry found himself on the verge of bankruptcy several times before reaching solid ground.Matthew Weiner shopped his TV show around Hollywood, but it was rejected all over town. Mad Men finally made it to the screen seven years after it was written.I have come to compare life to a game of Whack-A-Mole. (You know that arcade game in which players use a mallet to hit toy moles back into their holes?) Well, life seems to whack us all over the head from time-to-time- in big ways and in small ways. In ways that have to do with our career and ways that have to do with our personal lives. They all intermingle. The people I interviewed are where they are today becau se, even after getting whacked multiple times, they found a way to lick their wounds then pop back up with a smile. This is what you must do in this world. So, the next time you get a whack, recall a specific story that inspires you, then figure out a way to pop yourself out of whatever hole you happen to be in.This article was originally published on LinkedIn. Ignite Brand Loyalty and Win the Love of Customers

Ignite Brand Loyalty and Win the Love of Customers Ignite Brand Loyalty and Win the Love of Customers Ignite Brand Loyalty and Win the Love of Customers Sheehan, author of Loveworks: How the worlds top marketers make emotional connections to win in the marketplace (powerHouse Books, 2013) Losing his Jay ZX Lego character on a shopping trip upset Luka Apps pretty badly. So the seven-year-old sent an email to Lego headquarters explaining what happened and asked (hopefully) for a replacement. The response from Richard in Legos customer services division is now legendary. Not only did Luka get a new Jay, he received a story hell remember for a lifetime. Lego is one brand that understands the power of the small gesture and brand loyalty. They made a boys dream come true and inspired him to dream. Lego also showed that they understand what their product is about and that it cares enough to personalize its customer services. That personal touch has no doubt cemented Luka as a lifelong fan, one who will carry on the Lego tradition with his own children in the future. The Brand Loyalty Opportunity More than a decade ago, the company brand conversation moved from selling by yelling, to winning the hearts of consumers. At that time, globalization of the commodities markets saw cheap goods flood into stores, with the focus on quantity overshadowing quality, and producers relying on price-point to generate mass sales. It was then that brands realized that they couldnt compete on price alone. They need to offer more. This marketing concept has elevated the expectations of consumers and changed the way that brands do business. That concept was captured in our Lovemarksproject. Its about creating meaningful relationships and giving people a reason to invest their time, money, and attention. Its a two way relationship, and one that starts with respect and builds through emotional connections. Respect is about product performance, nurturing trust with customers, and enhancing brand reputation. As Frankie Byrne said, Respect is love in plain clothes. Nurturing Brand Loyalty, One Customer at a Time In order to grow brand loyalty, brands need to prove themselves at every step. Performance is the ultimate table stake. If its too hard to use, people will find an easier solution. If its unreliable, it will be discarded. And performance isnt limited to just product; its corporate governance, customer service, and commitment to delivery. It also requires brands to jealously guard their reputations and go beyond whats expected of them. Appledid just that when they unwittingly served a tech blogger whose iMac started to crash a month after his warranty expired. They replaced the faulty components for free, a decision that saw him proclaim to the world that he would only ever buy Apple from that day onward. Had Apple stuck to the letter of their contract, they could have lost a customer, and one who might have spread a negative word. Instead, Apple created an inspirational consumer who now advocates on their behalf because of how he was treated. This type of social marketingdefines todays consumer-driven marketplace. Moving beyond respect to love requires that personal touch. Brands have to be able to connect on a level beyond a commercial transaction. They have to evoke strong emotions through the experiences they offer through their products, their purpose, their stories and their vision. How can your company cultivate its own Lovemark and start generating lifelong brand loyalty? Here are five steps to get you started: 1) Generate Insight Ask whether the insights that traditional research is producing are insightful? Most arent. To uncover revelations, get personally involved with people. 2) Raise the Bar Raise the customer service standard from giving people what they want to giving them what they never dreamed possible. Go past satisfaction to inspiration. Amazon, for example, has appointed Customer Experience Bar Raisers. 3) Appeal to All Five Senses Customers operate on all five senses sight, sound, touch, taste and scent. Most brands operate on one or two. Find ways to bring all five senses into the customer experience. 4) Be Personable Add empathy to delivery. Ask to be invited into customers individual hearts. This is intimacy. The Ritz-Carlton switched Please stay with us to Let us stay with you. 5) Be Inspiring Customers today are bombarded with information. Theres no mystery left, yet its what we dont know that has most value. To become loved, bring forth inspiration, dreams, icons and myths, stories and past / present / future together. Once youve embedded this approach, dont stop there. Just as love can be won, love can be lost. Show commitment and passion for people, and it will be returned. See the 14 Best Ways to Develop Employees

See the 14 Best Ways to Develop Employees See the 14 Best Ways to Develop Employees The right employee training, development, and education, at the right time, provides big payoffs for the employer in increased productivity, knowledge, loyalty, and contribution from employees. Learn the approaches that will guarantee that your training and employee development bring a return on your investment. Organizations continued to make healthy investments in employee learning in 2016, finds the Association for Talent Development’s  2017 State of the Industry Report, which was sponsored by LinkedIn Learning and Study.com. Organizations spent $1,273 per employee in 2016 on direct learning expenditure, compared with $1,252 in 2015. This figure captures the design, administration, and delivery costs associated with learning programs, including the salaries of talent development staff. Organizations continue to exhibit a commitment to employee training and development and learning. According to the report, the average number of formal learning hours invested in employees also grew, to 34.1 hours in 2016. This number was up from 33.5 hours in 2015.   This is the fourth year in a row that registers an increase in both the direct learning expenditure by employers and the number of learning hours experienced per employee. More Findings From the State of the Training Industry Report The ATD report also tells you the following about employee training content, delivery methods, and what training and development education covered. The top three areas of training content in 2016 were managerial and supervisory (14 percent), mandatory and compliance training (11 percent), and processes, procedures, and business practices (10 percent).Technology-based learning accounted for 45 percent of learning hours used, up from 41 percent in 2015.13 percent of direct learning expenditures went to tuition reimbursement programs. The average cost of each learning hour slightly decreased from $82 to $80. Employee Training Delivery Methods Employers wisely spent their training and development funds in diversified methods of training presentation to meet the needs of their employees. Instructor-led, live face-to-face in the classroom was the delivery method chosen for 49 percent of learning hours in 2015.  26 percent of direct learning expenditures went to outsourced or external activities. (In 2015, for the average organization, 28 percent of direct learning expenditure went to outsourced or external activities (which include consulting services, external content development and licenses, and workshops and training programs delivered by external providers), similar to previous years.) On-the-job learning was a key part of employees’ development experiences; learning that occurs during work was emphasized heavily in two-thirds of participating organizations. (Over 60 percent of the employer spending was invested in internal expenditures such as video, manuals, training needs assessment, and trainer salaries.) Ensuring That the Use of Training Is Beneficial for Organizations With this investment of hours and dollars in employee development, organizations need to make certain that their investments are wise. Every employee in every organization has different needs for training. They each have different modes of training from which they can learn most successfully. Employees have different expectations from developmental opportunities. But, the majority of your employees expect that you will invest in their long-term development. According to the ATD 2015 study, direct expenditure on employee development as a percentage of payroll increased from 4 to 4.3 percent. Important Aspects of Employee Development and Training How training needs are determined, how training is viewed by employees, and how training is delivered become critically important issues. Training trends and methods for gaining knowledge, other than traditional classroom presentations, such as coaching and mentoring, take center stage. New employee orientation, or new employee onboarding, is a significant factor in helping new employees hit the ground running. Training that helps each employee grow their skills and knowledge to better perform their current job is appreciated as a benefit. The opportunity for development also increases employee loyalty, and thus retention, and helps you attract the best possible employees.   Transfer of training from the training provider, whether online or in a classroom, to the job, is also increasingly reviewed as you invest more resources in training. Learn the approaches to employee development that will guarantee a return on your investment and ensure employee loyalty. Organizations are increasingly asking for monetary justification that the developmental opportunities that you provide for your employees produce results- and you will need to be prepared to demonstrate your results. Options for Education and Development for Employees Options for employee development are magnifying due to these factors: technological innovations, employee retention strategies, andthe need for organizations to constantly develop their employees ability to keep up with the pace of change. So, sending an employee off for a one-day seminar or a week-long workshop is only one of many options that exist now. The American Society for Training and Development, now the Association for Talent Development (ATD),  has traditionally recommended a minimum of 40 hours of training a year for every employee. This is consistent with the emphasis employees place on the opportunity to grow and develop both their skills and career while in your employ. The chance for ongoing development, is one of the top five factors employees want to experience at work. In fact, the inability of an employee to see progress is an often cited reason for leaving an employer. As a retention strategy for your preferred employees, employee development rates highly. Only the employees perception of their salary and benefits as competitive, and reporting to a manager they like, rate higher. 14 Options for Employee Development When you think about education, training, and employee development, options exist externally, internally, and online. Choices range from seminars to book clubs to mentoring programs. In the ATD survey, over 60 percent of the expenditures employers made on employee development and education was spent internally, so its important to recognize their  contribution.   Here is a summary of the existing alternatives to help your employees continue to grow. For recruiting, retention, and managing change and continuous improvement, adopt all of these practices within your organization. External Education, Employee Development, and Training Options Seminars, workshops, and classes come in every variety imaginable, both in-person and online.Take field trips to other companies and organizations.Colleges and universities, and occasionally, local adult education, community colleges or technical schools provide classes. Universities are reaching out to adult learners with evening and weekend MBA and business programs.Professional association seminars, meetings, and conferences offer training opportunities. Internal Education, Employee Development, and Training Options Onsite seminars and classes provide training customized to your organization.Coaching gives employees the opportunity to share knowledge.Mentoring is increasingly important in employee development and training as are formal mentoring programs.Form a book club at work. What Your Organization Can Do to Facilitate Continuous Learning and Regular Employee Development Opportunities Create a learning environment. Communicate the expectation of  ongoing, continuous learning.Offer work time support for learning. Make online learning and reading part of every employees day.Provide a professional library.Offer college tuition reimbursement.Enable flexible schedules so employees can attend classes.Pay for professional association memberships and conference attendance annually for employees. Employee development opportunities are crucial to the ongoing growth and progress of the people you employ. They are also critical to ensure their retention and success. Be creative to provide diverse opportunities for employee development. The opportunities you have to train and develop your employees are expanding every year. Why not take advantage of the opportunities when development is one of your employees most significant expectations from an employer?

This morning routine will save you 20 hours per week

This morning routine will save you 20 hours per week This morning routine will save you 20 hours per week The traditional 9â€"5 workday is poorly structured for high productivity. Perhaps when most work was physical labor, but not in the knowledge working world we now live in.Although this may be obvious based on people’s mediocre performance, addiction to stimulants, lack of engagement, and the fact that most people hate their jobs now there’s loads of scientific evidence you can’t ignore. The Myth of the 8 Hour  WorkdayThe most productive countries in the world do not work 8 hours per day. Actually,  the most productive countries have the  shortest  workdays.People in countries like Luxembourg are working approximately 30 hours per week (approximately 6 hours per day, 5 days per week) and making  more money  on average than people working longer workweeks.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! This is the  average  person in those countries. But what about the super:Goal: Be as healthy as possible. Obstacle: eating bad food. If-then: if I’m tempted to eat unhealthy foods in an impulsive and non-planned manner, then I will immediately drink a big glass of water and do 20 jumping-jacks.It doesn’t really matter what your pre-planned response is, so long as you consistently do it. By consistently following through, you’ll create small wins. Small wins build self-respect and confidence, thus lowering your need for willpower. Small wins and confidence solidify the decisions you’ve made, giving you increased inner-knowing that you absolutely will achieve your goal.Another key reason that confidence lowers the need for willpower is that the more confident you get, the more you genuinely DESIRE better results. At the heart of willpower is not actually knowing what you want. Indeed, you may actually  still desire  eating bad food, for example. Thus, you’re at continually battling within yourself. This is a horrible yet common way to live. Most people do not know what they truly want. They don’t know how to make decisions. They haven’t learned how to build genuine confidence. Most people’s lives are a constant back-and-forth of indecision and lack of clarity. Yet, decision and clarity go hand-in-hand are not actually hard to build. They are skills. You start with one simple one. And watch the ripples grow and success compound. As you become more confident and mature as a person,  your desires fundamentally change. You stop wanting stuff you used to want. You start wanting to succeed. You start loving yourself enough to win at life. You start seeing a much bigger picture for yourself. You realize increasingly more that you are the one painting the picture and actually have been the entire time.Rather than being disappointed by your previous choices, you’re increasingly grateful for what your life is. You see increased vision and potential in everything around you.Don’t Forget to Psychologically Detach and  PlayResearch in several fields  has found that  recovery from work  is a necessity for staying energetic, engaged, and healthy when facing job demands.“Recovery”  is the process of reducing or eliminating physical and psychological strain/stress caused by work. One particular recovery strategy that is getting lots of attention in recent research is called  â€œpsychological detachment from work.”  True psychological detachment occurs when you completely refrain from work-related activities  and thoughts  during non-work time.Proper detachment/recovery from work is essential  for physical and psychological health, in addition to engaged and productive work. Yet, few people do it. Most people are always “available” to their email and work. Millennials are the worst, often wearing the openness to work “whenever” as a badge of honor. It’s not a badge of honor.Research has found that people who psychologically detach from work experience: Less work-related fatigue and procrastination Far greater engagement  at work, which is defined as vigor, dedication, and absorption (i.e., “flow”) Greater work-life balance,  which directly  relates to the quality of life Greater marital satisfaction Greater mental health When you’re at work, be fully absorbed. When it’s time to call it a day, completely detach yourself from work and become absorbed in the other areas of your life.If you don’t detach, you’ll never fully be present or engaged at work or at home. You’ll be under constant strain, even if minimally. Your sleep will suffer. Your relationships will be shallow. Your life will not be happy. Not only that, but lots of science has found  play  to be extremely important for productivity and creativity. Just like your body needs a reset, which you can get through fasting, you also need to reset from work  in order to do your best work.  Thus, you need to step away from work and dive into other beautiful areas of your life. For me, that’s goofing off with my kids.Stuart Brown, the founder of the  National Institute for Play, has studied the “Play Histories” of over six thousand people and concludes playing can radically improve everything from personal well-being to relationships to learning to an organization’s potential to innovate. As  Greg McKeown explains,  â€œVery successful people see play as essential for creativity.”In his  TED talk, Brown said, “Play leads to brain plasticity, adaptability, and creativity… Nothing fires up the brain like play.” There is a burgeoning body of literature highlighting the extensive  cognitive  and  social  benefits of play, including:Cognitive Enhanced memory and focus Improved language learning skills Creative problem solving Improved mathematics skills Increased ability to self-regulate, an essential component of  motivation and goal achievement Social Cooperation Team work Conflict resolution Leadership skill development Control of impulses and aggressive behavior Listen to  Brain Music  or Songs on  RepeatIn her book,  On Repeat: How Music Plays the Mind,  psychologist Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis explains why listening to music on repeat improves focus. When you’re listening to a song on repeat, you tend to  dissolve  into the song, which blocks out mind wandering (let your mind wander while you’re away from work!).WordPress founder,  Matt Mullenweg, listens to one single song on repeat to get into flow. So do authors  Ryan Holiday  and  Tim Ferriss, and many others.Give it a try.You can use  this website  to listen to YouTube videos on repeat.I generally listen to classical music or electronic music (like video game type music). Working with a Recruiter in a Buyers Market

Working with a Recruiter in a Buyer's Market Working with a Recruiter in a Buyer's Market Working with a Recruiter in a Buyer’s MarketMy book about how to best work with recruiters, Headhunters Revealed! , was actually written in the heights of a candidate-driven market (1999-2000), but only hit the shelves of Barnes Noble at the beginning of a client (employer) driven market (2001). We’ve now made the cycle once again. It’s nothing new. There are both hotter and slower times for employment. Like all cycles in life, this too shall pass. However, knowing how to best interact with recruiters in these more modest times can make the difference in you getting the support you need from that front door avenue of job search.Usually people focus 80 percent of their efforts on front door methods (applying for open positions, recruiters, online postings) and only 20 percent of their time on back door avenues (unadvertised job market, non-traditional networking, personal branding campaign). I’m a HUGE proponent and teacher of more back door methods, which are applicable in a ll economic times and keep you out of the crowds. I recommend that people switch the percentages to 80 percent of their time on back door methods and only 20 percent on front door. But nonetheless, having that 20 percent front door working for you while you fish your own ponds is a smart move. Here are 5 points to keep in mind to make the most out of recruiter relationships:1. Practice humility. In hot times, you can generally throw your weight around a bit more with recruiters because, if you’re really good at what you do, they will want to place you. However, employment market today is not hot. So, you want to be on your humble best behavior in working with recruiters. If you get a call on something, be glad rather than perturbed because it wasn’t a perfect fit. Establish a mutually beneficial relationship with the recruiter (e.g., who can you refer who might be right for that job?) so that you remain on that recruiter’s radar for other opportunities. Realize that getting a ca ll from a recruiter in a slower market is a Godsend because many in the headhunting profession have already left the business.2. Know your partner.A large percentage of recruiters leave headhunting in down markets because there’s simply less jobs to fill. So know that you will be dealing with one of two types of recruiters today: skilled veterans or newbies. Here’s why: Veterans have ridden these down cycles before and generally have a strong enough client list to get them through. Newbies become headhunters now because there are a lot of empty desks at the recruiting firms (wasted overhead)…so the office managers recruit to fill those seats. What does this matter to you? Honestly, a newbie can support you just as well- and hey, they have to start somewhere, right? It just pays to check a bit and create an upfront relationship with the person who’ll be handling your case- again, if you’re blessed enough to get a call.3. Submit and verify.Don’t wait for the call. Though r ecruiters will often seek and find the best in an industry for their hottest requirements, know that there are a lot of good people already in their database in times like these. So proactively put your materials in their hands, or hard-drives. Email your resume, in both Word and text form, and then call or email a day or so later to verify receipt.4. Wait. One of the biggest issues people have with recruiters is that they don’t call back. This was exactly why I wrote my book, Headhunters Revealed! : to teach people how the game of recruiting works so that you don’t have unrealistic expectations. A recruiter is not a counselor or career guide. He or she is a salesperson, first and foremost in search of organizations who want to buy something (the client) and secondly in search of the right product to offer them (the candidate). Regardless of economic times, a recruiter WILL get in touch with you when they have a legitimate reason to do so- like your potential fit for a position. Don’t expect them to call until then. Sure, check in every few weeks to remind them of you but, if you’re smart, you aren’t putting all your hopes in being given a fish. Ideally, you’re learning how to fish better yourself through back door methods.5. Pick three.Recruiters can be a great source of surprise, out-of-the-blue opportunities that you may not have uncovered through your own back door means, so set yourself up with a few…but not too many. If you go too broad, getting your resume in the hands of everyone on the planet, you’ll look a bit like chopped liver when you are submitted by all to the same employer. Plus, that employer won’t want to get into a dog fight about who really represents you, so they may just exclude you from consideration. In short, the time you spend actively locating and engaging a few talented recruiters on your behalf can pay off in big, unexpected dividends. But seek to know how they work and what their particular constraints are in thes e tighter employment times. Plant those seeds, water them every few weeks, and get on to controlling bigger gardens of your own design through effective back door techniques.

Write the Perfect Thank You Note

Write the Perfect Thank You Note Write the Perfect Thank You Note There are things that make the perfect thank you note: brevity, personalization and timing. Hiring managers are busy. Not only are they interviewing for a new person on their team, but they also have to handle their day-to-day responsibilities as well. A brief, to-the-point e-mail is more appreciated than a lengthy letter. If you interviewed with more than one person, each thank you note should be tailored to that person and what you discussed when you met with them. Lastly, sending your thank you e-mail within 24 hours is a must. It shows that you’re excited about the role and interested in moving forward. Here is a template that you can customize to get you started: Subject Line Thank you! Body Hi [Interviewer’s name], Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. I really enjoyed discussing the [Job Title] position with you. [Mention something you discussed about the position in your interview that you liked]. After speaking with you, Im even more excited about the role, so please let me know if there is anything else I can do to move forward in the process. Thank you again, and have a great rest of you week. Warm regards, [Your name] You don’t want to stand out for the wrong reasons, like grammatical or spelling errors. So check everything three times. Have a friend check, too. Another way to stand out is by offering a simple solution or a link to an article that relates to an issue the hiring manager’s team is trying to solve. As long as your thank you note is sincere and shows your enthusiasm for the position, you’re sure to impress the interviewer.
